We’ve been slathering sunscreen on ourselves since we were kids, trying to stay healthy and avoid getting cancer. Turns out many of the ingredients in sunscreen can actually encourage cancer growth, and all that blocking out the sun isn’t completely healthy either. The sun is still the best source of vitamin D we have. It creates this entire vital vitamin we need with just about twenty minutes of exposure a day. So a little dose of sun is a good thing, especially if you’re also getting the healthy fats the body needs to create that vitamin D. Good things there are other ways to protect our skin from the sun aside from sunscreens that we’ve become too accustomed to.
·Wide-Brimmed Hat
If you think that these hats are only for fashion purposes, think again. The shade that you hat’s brim give you help protect your face and neck from being directly hit by the sun’s harmful UV rays. This then keep those parts from easily becoming sunburned especially when you’re at the beach or at the field watching a game.
·Sunglasses
Just because your eyes aren’t skin doesn’t mean the sun can’t damage them. Make sure every member of the family has a sunglass so that they can use it whenever they have to be out in the sun for extended period of time.
·Clothing
Long-sleeved tops and pants would be better clothing than shorts and tank tops if you know you’d be exposed to the sun for long periods of time. Yes they can’t totally block UV rays but they can at least lessen the amount that hits the skin. But if you really want to make sure no UV rays penetrates your clothes, there are UV protected clothing available nowadays as well as swimwear.
·Automotive Window Tint
People think that because they’re indoors, whether inside a car or a building, they’re spared from the harmful damages of the sun. But, you’re forgetting windows that serve as gateway for the sun. Go the extra mile and invest in window film for your car and home to make sure nothing sneaks in. It blocks 99% of UV rays at wavelengths known to contribute to skin damage over time. With a full range of window tints from dark to clear find a dealer near you and select the window tint that is best for you.
·Healthy Eating
Eating foods rich in healthy fats and antioxidants helps protect your skin from damage, including UV damage. That means you should reach for dark, colorful fruits and vegetables that contain carotenoids and other powerful antioxidants. Also eat nuts, seeds, coconut oil, avocados, sea vegetables, and microalgae for the best omega fatty acids and even some healthy saturated fats. Carotenoids give your skin a healthy bronze glow even without sunlight while making sure you burn less often.
·Aloe
In case despite your efforts you still get sunburned, because sometimes even when you have a combination of different sun protection, the temperature can be unpredictable. When this happens, applying aloe from the plant, not the ones sold in bottles, on your burns help soothe or cool it off.
